How it works

From first card to ready, one swipe at a time

Little and often beats cramming. Ten minutes on the bus counts.

  1. Swipe the cards

Each card is one rule, with a picture and an exam tip. Right if you know it. Left and it comes back later.

  2. Quick checks

Every few cards you get a short quiz that mixes new rules with ones you learned last week.

  3. Mock tests

50 questions, 57 minutes, pass mark 43. Flag questions, change answers and review them at the end.

  4. Know you're ready

Your readiness score climbs as you learn. Questions you keep missing come back until you get them.

RedLearner rules you MUST follow. The law.
AmberNot quite. Look at this one again.
GreenGot it. On to the next.

Questions

Good to know

Is TheorySwipe official?

No. TheorySwipe is an independent app, not made or endorsed by DVSA, DVLA or GOV.UK. The Highway Code text is used under the Open Government Licence, and our practice questions are written by us, so they are not the official DVSA revision questions.

Is it really free?

Yes. No adverts, no in-app purchases and nothing to sign up for.

Does it need the internet?

Only to install it. Every card, question, sign and picture is inside the app, so it works on the bus, on a plane or with no signal.

Will I lose my progress when the app updates?

No. Updates keep your progress. If you uninstall the app or clear its storage, your progress is deleted, because it is only stored on your phone.

Is it up to date?

It covers the current Highway Code, including the hierarchy of road users, safe passing distances, the Dutch Reach and 20 mph limits in Wales. If you spot something out of date, email us and we will fix it.

Is there an iPhone version?

Not yet. TheorySwipe is on Android first.
